Hawthorn is a member of the Rosaceae family, which is small, shrub-like tree with sharp thorns. Its berries along with its leaves have been used in modern herbal preparations. In particular, Hawthorn has been used as a natural approach to heart disease. Studies have shown that Hawthorn is used to protect the heart and vascular system through dilation of the veins and arteries, regulation of heart rate, and lowering of cholesterol levels.
How does Hawthorn accomplish this? Research has determined that Hawthorn berries contain flavonoids, which protect the body through their antioxidant activities. In particular, a recent discovery of vitexin – an antioxidant component within Hawthorn’s flavonoid complexes – may be a primary factor in its cardiac action.
In Germany, Hawthorn is approved for treatment of mild to moderate symptoms of chronic heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure. It has been shown* to:
- increase blood flow to the heart
- improve fatigue and shortness of breath
- lower blood pressure
- promote regular heart rhythm
- lower cholesterol levels
